Lawsuit Claims Racial and Gender-Based Discrimination
In a lawsuit filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of an employee of the publication, the New York Times has been hit with a wrongful discrimination lawsuit alleging that it unfairly treated white males seeking promotions within the company. The lawsuit specifically contends that the New York Times “chose not to promote a well-qualified white male employee because of his race and/or sex.” Officials at the paper deny the allegations.
Instead, Times officials suggest that the lawsuit is politically motivated, as the Times has consistently challenged the actions of the current administration.
EEOC officials cite a number of facts to support their allegations:
- The plaintiff, a white male, applied for a promotion to the position of ‘deputy real estate editor,” having “extensive relevant experience”
- The plaintiff did not get selected for the final round of interviews, which included a white female, a black male, an Asian female and a multi-racial female.
- The multi-racial female got the promotion, even though she did not have any real estate experience (purportedly a requirement for the job)
- The hiring manager sent an email indicating that she would be hiring the multiracial female before she interviewed her
The EEOC also alleges that the Times had a stated objective of increasing the presence of women and people of color in management, and that this hiring decision is evidence of that. The Times rejects those assertions.
